York City Walls

They extend for 2.5 miles and enclose an area of 263 acres. The walls still retain all four of their impressive gateways into the city, called bars (main bars: Bootham Bar, Monk Bar, Walmgate Bar and Micklegate Bar), as well as 34 of their 39 interval towers.

These scenic Medieval walls, built on Roman foundations, are the longest in England and circumnavigate the city of York and it takes about two hours to circumnavigate York along it's beautifully preserved Medieval walls.

The City Walls are not complete, however this was deliberate as William the Conqueror created a big pool of water to deter would-be attackers.
