The imposing walls extend for 2.5 miles and enclose an area of 263 acres. The protective walls still retain all four of their impressive gateways into the city, called bars - Bootham Bar, Monk Bar, Walmgate Bar and Micklegate Bar.
These scenic Medieval walls, built on Roman foundations, are the longest in England and circumnavigate the city of York, It takes about two hours to circumnavigate York along it's beautifully preserved Medieval walls.
The City Walls are not totally complete, however this was deliberate as William the Conqueror created a big pool of water to deter would-be attackers.
